AGI certification = pass the AGI knowledge test (plus FOI unless you're exempt under §61.213), then complete a short administrative appointment where an examiner verifies your results and processes the IACRA. No checkride. No flight time. Daytona DPE does it virtually for $200 flat, temporary certificate issued at the end of the call.
What the AGI certificate authorizes
Under 14 CFR 61.215, an Advanced Ground Instructor may provide:
- Ground training in the aeronautical knowledge areas required for any certificate or rating — private, commercial, and ATP
- Ground training required for flight reviews under §61.56
- Endorsements for knowledge tests (written test sign-offs)
The one thing the AGI does not cover is instrument-rating ground training — that's the Instrument Ground Instructor (IGI). Most people who want AGI also want IGI, and both are processed in the same appointment for one fee.
Why hold an AGI?
- Flight-school and ground-school teaching — paid ground instruction without a CFI
- Logging ground instruction given — a résumé credential for aviation educators and 141 schools
- Knowledge-test endorsements — sign off students for their writtens
- Stepping stone to CFI — the AGI knowledge test overlaps heavily with the CFI written (FIA), so many pilots knock out the AGI on the way
Eligibility — what you need first
- AGI knowledge test pass (AKTR valid 24 calendar months)
- FOI knowledge test pass — unless FOI-exempt (below)
- Age 18+ and able to read, speak, write, and understand English
When the FOI is not required
Per 14 CFR 61.213, the FOI is waived if you already hold:
- A current Flight Instructor (CFI) certificate
- An existing ground instructor certificate (e.g., adding AGI to a BGI)
- A teacher's certificate (state/local government or accredited institution) authorizing teaching at 7th grade level or higher
How the appointment runs
- Identity verification
- Knowledge test result review (AGI AKTR + FOI or exemption proof)
- IACRA application sign-off
- Temporary Advanced Ground Instructor certificate issued on the spot
Typically 20 minutes. The temporary is valid immediately; the permanent plastic arrives in 4–6 weeks. Total turnaround from contact to certificate: usually 3–5 business days.
Pricing — $200 flat
$200 per appointment regardless of how many ground instructor certificates are issued. Bring your AGI + IGI AKTRs together and both are processed in one appointment for one fee. No travel fees, no rescheduling fees, no unqualified fees.
