The short answer

SOE removal is an administrative action — no additional checkride. We verify your supervised hours and endorsements on a 20-minute video call, sign the IACRA, and your CFI certificate is unrestricted same-appointment. $200 flat.

What an SOE limitation actually is

When a CFI certificate is initially issued under certain conditions, the FAA can add a Supervised Operating Experience (SOE) limitation. The limitation requires the new instructor to log a specified amount of supervised flight instruction time before the certificate becomes fully unrestricted.

Once the supervised hours and required endorsements are complete, the SOE limitation can be administratively removed by a Designated Pilot Examiner. No additional checkride is required — this is an eligibility-and-documentation review, not a practical test.

The result: a CFI certificate with the SOE limitation language stripped, restoring full unrestricted instructional privileges.

Who needs SOE removal

This applies to CFIs whose initial issuance included an SOE limitation — often newly-minted CFIs coming out of an integrated training program, particularly Part 141 or 142 schools, where the FSDO or DPE issued the certificate with the SOE box ticked.

Common indicators on your certificate:

If you're unsure whether your certificate carries an SOE limitation, the easiest check is to look at the limitations line on the plastic certificate itself, or pull up your most recent IACRA-issued temporary certificate.

How the SOE removal actually works

The DPE's role is to:

  1. Verify your identity
  2. Confirm the SOE limitation appears on your current certificate
  3. Review your supervised-hours log and confirm it meets the limitation's requirements
  4. Verify the supervising-instructor endorsement(s) are in your logbook
  5. Process the IACRA application for the limitation removal
  6. Issue a temporary certificate with the SOE language removed

The whole process is virtual, 20 minutes, same-day issuance.

Frequently asked

What exactly is an SOE limitation?
SOE stands for Supervised Operating Experience. It's a limitation the FAA may add to a CFI certificate at initial issuance, requiring the new instructor to log a specified amount of supervised instruction before the certificate becomes unrestricted. Once the supervised hours and endorsements are complete, the limitation can be administratively removed by a DPE — no checkride required.
Do I need a checkride to remove the SOE limitation?
No. SOE removal is an administrative action — eligibility-and-documentation verification, not a practical test. The DPE reviews your supervised hours, endorsements, and identity, then signs the IACRA limitation removal.
What documents do I need?
(1) Current CFI certificate showing the SOE limitation, (2) logbook with supervised-instruction entries and supervising-instructor endorsements, (3) started IACRA application for limitation removal, (4) government photo ID. After contact form submission, you'll receive a tailored checklist.
How fast can I get the limitation removed?
Total turnaround is usually 3–5 business days from contact form to issued certificate. The video appointment is about 20 minutes. A minimum of 24 hours advance notice is required for FAA DMS oversight.
Can this be done virtually?
Yes. FAA guidance permits SOE limitation removal to be processed virtually with a DPE. Daytona DPE has removed SOE limitations for CFIs in many states.
What if my logbook is paper-only?
Send high-resolution photos or scans of the relevant pages. We confirm details together on the video call. Paper logbooks are common and not an obstacle.
Do I need to be near Daytona Beach?
No. SOE removal is conducted virtually regardless of your location.
My SOE hours are complete but my supervising CFI hasn't endorsed yet — can we still proceed?
No. The endorsement(s) must be in place before the appointment. Once the endorsement is logged, submit the contact form.
How much does it cost?
$200 flat. Payable by Zelle or Venmo at the appointment, after the certificate is issued. No charge if your documents don't pass review during the appointment.
When does the permanent certificate arrive?
The temporary certificate is issued at the end of the appointment and is valid immediately. The permanent plastic certificate is mailed by the FAA within 4 to 6 weeks.
