You looked at your flight instructor certificate, saw a date in the past, and searched "CFI expired what do I do." Take a breath — depending on where you sit on the calendar, the fix might be one online course and a 20-minute video call. But the clock matters more than it ever did, so figure out which scenario you're in today, not next month.
First: your certificate probably didn't "expire" at all
The FAA's final rule effective December 1, 2024 removed the expiration date from CFI certificates. Under the amended 14 CFR §61.19, a flight instructor certificate is now issued without an expiration date — it never goes invalid the way the old plastic did.
What replaced expiration is the Recent Experience End Date (REED) under §61.197: a rolling 24-month deadline that gates your privilege to instruct, not the certificate itself. If your certificate still shows a printed expiration date from the old system, the FAA treats that date as your first REED.
That distinction is the whole ballgame. Under the old rules, an expired CFI meant an eventual reinstatement checkride, period. Under the new rules there's a middle lane — but it's only open for three months.

One thing that surprises people: you cannot instruct during the grace window. Once the REED passes, instructional privileges are suspended until your recent experience is re-established and recorded. The grace period preserves the paperwork path — it does not keep you teaching in the meantime.
Scenario 1: You're inside the 3-month grace window
This is the one where speed pays. Two steps:
- Graduate an FAA-approved FIRC. Flight Instructor Refresher Courses run online from multiple FAA-approved providers — typically 16 hours of coursework most people spread over one to two weeks. The graduation certificate is your qualifying recent-experience method.
- Complete the administrative appointment. A FIRC certificate by itself restores nothing — CFIs cannot self-file. Your recent experience only exists in the FAA's eyes once an examiner validates your IACRA 8710-1. Scenario 2: The grace window closed
If more than 3 calendar months have passed since your REED — or your certificate expired under the pre-2024 rules and was never renewed — reinstatement falls under 14 CFR §61.199, and §61.199 requires a practical test. A checkride with an examiner: oral plus flight, on flight-instructor standards.
Straight talk: there is no administrative shortcut around §61.199. No FIRC, no form, no fee gets a lapsed-beyond-grace CFI back without the ride, and you should be skeptical of anyone who implies otherwise. My certificate has an expiration date printed on it — did it expire?
Not the way it used to. Since December 1, 2024, the certificate itself doesn't expire; a printed expiration date from the old system is treated as your first REED. What lapses on that date is your privilege to instruct.
Can I still teach after my REED passes?
No. Instructional privileges are suspended the day after the REED until recent experience is re-established and recorded on a DPE-validated 8710-1. The grace window does not extend your teaching privileges.
How long is the grace period?
Three calendar months after the REED, and it's FIRC-only — the other §61.197 recent-experience methods must be completed before the REED, not after.
Does finishing a FIRC automatically restore me?
