The short answer

Two no-checkride reinstatement paths under 14 CFR 61.199: (1) civilian — within 3 calendar months of your Recent Experience End Date, graduate an approved FIRC, then a DPE validates your 8710-1; (2) military — a U.S. Armed Forces instructor pilot or pilot examiner proficiency check within the preceding 6 months, no FIRC required. Both are administrative video appointments. Past both windows: a practical test is required, full stop.

First: which situation are you in?

The 3-month window, precisely

Since the FAA's Dec 1, 2024 rule, CFI certificates don't expire — your recent experience does, on your Recent Experience End Date (REED). Miss it and your instructor privileges lapse. The rule gives you a grace path: complete an approved Flight Instructor Refresher Course and have the application validated within 3 calendar months after your REED, and the whole thing stays administrative.

Example: REED of March 31 → the FIRC + validation path is open through June 30. July 1, it's a checkride. Calendar months, not 90 days — the end of the third month after the lapse is the wall.

Military reinstatement — the path nobody tells you about

A U.S. military instructor pilot or pilot examiner who has passed a military instructor proficiency check within the preceding 6 months can reinstate FAA flight instructor privileges administratively — no FIRC, no checkride. If you're an active or Guard/Reserve IP whose civilian CFI lapsed while you were busy flying for the government, this is usually your fastest route back, and it pairs naturally with MCE/MIE processing if you're converting other qualifications at the same time.

What you'll need

After you submit the contact form, you'll get a checklist email tailored to which path you're on.

How the appointment runs

  1. Identity verification (valid, unexpired photo ID)
  2. Eligibility review — FIRC certificate + window math, or military proficiency check documentation
  3. IACRA application validated and signed live
  4. Temporary certificate with reinstated privileges issued on the call

About 20 minutes. FAA oversight requires 24-hour advance scheduling notice. Total turnaround from inquiry to temporary: typically 3–5 business days — which matters when your window has weeks left, not months.

Pricing — $200 flat

Same as every Daytona DPE service. Paid by credit card, Venmo, or Zelle after the appointment, only if the certificate is issued. If eligibility review shows you're outside the window, there's no charge and we'll tell you exactly what the practical-test route looks like instead.

Frequently asked

My CFI recent experience lapsed — do I need a checkride to reinstate?
Not necessarily. If you are within 3 calendar months after your Recent Experience End Date (REED), you can complete an approved Flight Instructor Refresher Course (FIRC) and have a DPE validate your 8710-1 — purely administrative, no checkride. Beyond the 3-month window, civilian reinstatement requires a flight instructor practical test.
How does military CFI reinstatement work?
A U.S. military instructor pilot or pilot examiner who has passed a military instructor proficiency check within the preceding 6 months can reinstate flight instructor privileges administratively — no FIRC and no checkride. Bring the military proficiency check documentation, your certificate, photo ID, and an IACRA application; the appointment runs about 20 minutes by video.
Can CFI reinstatement be done online?
Yes. Flight instructor recent-experience validation and reinstatement inside the administrative windows are FAA-approved for remote processing. Daytona DPE handles them worldwide by secure video call — about 20 minutes, temporary certificate issued on the call, $200 flat.
What counts as the 3-month reinstatement window?
Three calendar months after the month your recent experience ended (your REED). Example: if your REED was March 31, you can use the FIRC + validation path through June 30. On July 1 the administrative path closes and a practical test is required.
What if I'm past the 3-month window?
Civilian path: a flight instructor practical test (checkride) with an examiner is required under 61.199. Military instructor pilots may still qualify for administrative reinstatement via a proficiency check within the preceding 6 months. If you're not sure which side you're on, submit the form and we'll confirm eligibility before you spend anything.
How fast can I be reinstated?
If your FIRC is complete (or your military proficiency check is documented), typically 3–5 business days from inquiry to temporary certificate, with the appointment itself taking about 20 minutes. FAA oversight requires 24-hour advance scheduling notice.
