The PC-24 SOE, in plain English

The PC-24 is Pilatus's single-pilot-capable jet, and its natural buyer is the long-time PC-12 operator finally adding turbofans. Type courses run in a full-flight simulator, and under 14 CFR 61.64(f)(2) the rating prints with the Supervised Operating Experience limitation unless you arrived with one of the §61.64(b) experience outs — a prior unrestricted turbojet type, 1,000 hours in two turbojets, 500 hours in the PC-24 itself. Here's the part that surprises PC-12 veterans: five thousand hours of PC-12 time doesn't count. It's turboprop time, and the outs are written around turbojet type ratings. The PC-24 is usually this pilot's first jet type rating, so the limitation prints, and until it's removed you act as PIC only under the direct observation of a pilot who holds the PC-24 without limitations.

It stings precisely because the PC-24 was bought to be flown the way the PC-12 was — single-pilot, owner-flown, into the same short strips. The good news: once the hours exist, the fix is paperwork, not performance.

The PC-24 mentor math

Your insurer almost certainly required mentor time in the jet anyway, and those flights can double as your SOE. The PC-24-specific catch: the fleet is still small and much of it flies for fractional and corporate operators, so the freelance mentor pool holding an unrestricted PC-24 is one of the thinnest in the light-jet world. A mentor with CJ, Phenom, or even PC-12 credentials — however good — does not qualify; §61.64(g)(1) requires the supervising pilot to hold the PC-24 type rating without limitations. Confirm that before hour one, because 25 hours behind the wrong mentor satisfy your insurance policy and nothing else.

The rest is standard §61.64(g): you perform the duties of PIC on every flight while the mentor observes (§61.64(g)(3)), and every flight gets logged with the mentor's written attestation (§61.64(g)(2)). The common miss is mentor-CFIs logging "dual given" instead of attesting supervised PIC time. Get the wording right from the first flight and the paperwork stays clean.
